Donnan equilibrium revisited: Coupling between ion concentrations, osmotic pressure, and donnan potential

چکیده
This paper discusses the little-known fact that Donnan’s equilibrium criteria established over 100 years ago neglected coupling between ion concentrations and osmotic pressure. Such can be treated based on general thermodynamic considerations including solvent equilibrium, leading to a membrane potential consists of not only classical Donnan term but also an additional due pressure, existence even when impermeable species are charged. coupled treatment conflicts with well-established Poisson–Boltzmann equation Nernst–Planck equation, is consistent extension these equations effects by Freise Schlogl, enables us view electrical double layer as equilibrium.

Note on Donnan Equilibrium and Osmotic Pressure Relationship between the Cells and the Serum
In a paper on the factors controlling the electrolyte and water distribution in the blood Van Slyke, Wu, and McLean (1) based their mathematical deduction on three fundamental postulates: (1) Approximate neutrality of the blood reaction; sum of base cations equals sum of anions. (2) Validity of Donnan’s law of membrane equilibrium. (3) Equality of the osmotic pressure of the fluid within the ce...

Measurements were made of electromotive force in the Donnan equilibrium of systems containing dilute solutions of protein and acid. Removal of the membrane produced a decrease of no more than 2 to 4 mv. in electromotive force, while the membrane potentials, as estimated by the usual arbitrary assumption, were of the order of 12 to 34 mv. Ion ratios, as calculated from analyses for total chlorid...
متن کاملBinding Effects in Multivalent Gibbs-Donnan Equilibrium
The classical Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium describes excess osmotic pressure associated with confined colloidal charges embedded in an electrolyte solution. In this work, we extend this approach to describe the influence of multivalent ion binding on the equilibrium force acting on a charged rod translocating between two compartments, thereby mimicking ionic effects on force balance during in vitro...
متن کاملThe Donnan equilibrium: I. On the thermodynamic foundation of the Donnan equation of state.
The thermodynamic equilibrium between charged colloids and an electrolyte reservoir is named after Frederic Donnan who first published on it one century ago (Donnan 1911 Z. Electrochem. 17 572). One of the intriguing features of the Donnan equilibrium is the ensuing osmotic equation of state which is a nonlinear one, even when both colloids and ions obey Van 't Hoff's ideal osmotic pressure law...
